Our Second Biggest Donation – To Date!
Before lockdown began the Trust had been in discussion with three of the local primary schools about helping local disadvantaged families, should the schools shut again. It had become clear that there are many families desperately seeking laptops to support with home learning and we were determined to help as many children as we could to receive their lessons at home, especially after losing so much time at school last year.
Unfortunately, earlier this month, the country was put into its third lockdown and as a result we promptly jumped into action. Chrome books were put forward as the best option and fifty families were identified.
As lockdown was introduced it very soon became apparent many more would be required. Trustees worked tirelessly to raise funds to purchase as many chrome books as we could. After ten days the Trustees had raised a staggering £35,000 and after liaising with 6 local schools and suppliers a deal was struck for 197 Brand New Chrome books suitable for all ages of students. Several amazing sponsors including Grove Parish Council, The Ruby and Will George Trust, Cllr Patrick O’Leary, via his district funds TRCCT and several others generously donated.
During the next week Ray and volunteers will hopefully deliver 197 chrome books split between Wantage C of E Primary School, Charlton Primary School, Stockham Primary School, Grove C of E Primary School, Millbrook Primary School and King Alfreds Academy with the possibility of a couple of others. The Chrome books will belong to the schools and they will decide who needs them the most.
The Trust are incredibly proud that not only have we provided tens of thousands of pounds worth of food to local families in need over the last ten months we have now provided 197 devices to enable a minimum of 197 students of all ages to get the education they thoroughly deserve.
We also wanted to highlight the great work Matt Baines (Wantage & Grove Community Facebook page), The Mix (Sustainable Wantage) and Wantage & District Chamber of Commerce are doing in refurbishing old laptops and giving them away to those in need. Please support these three great causes.
The Trust will be looking into doing more work in our community helping students and adults in education and self-improvement. Two more important ways we are reacting to Covid-19 and our changing way of life and as always making a real difference in our community!
